Stop # 22: Wilderness Road Campground and Picnic Area near Gibson Station

Wilderness Road Campground and Picnic Area is part of Cumberland Gap National Historical Park.  The national park is located at the border of Virginia, Tennessee and Kentucky.  The national park's Wilderness Road Campground and Picnic Area is located in the far western corner of Virginia.  A family of buffalo live near the entrance to the campground and picnic area.  I have camped here many times over the years and always enjoy the wooded setting and nice amenities.

Inside the campground area, which includes a delightful amphitheater.

In August, four of us gals camped here in this campground.  These next photos may be of particular interest to those gals - Martha from Abingdon and Pren from St. Paul, Virginia and Jaynie from Key West, Florida.  Hey, Jaynie, see how the colors are coming along here in these mountains now?!  The jeep is parked in the spot where Martha and Pren stayed, and the spot where Jaynie and I stayed was D-34.  Jaynie, here's some photos from D-34.  I'm sure you'll recollect that stump to the left of the picnic table.

Yep, that stump is still there! lol.

Jaynie, these pretty leaves are right beside where you had your vehicle parked during our stay.

Jayne, I can almost taste your wonderful outdoor cooking right now. Yum!
And I can nearly hear those coyotes off in the distance.  wildlife!!

Raccoons, or maybe a BEAR?! arrived here late one night in August... Loud WILD creatures ate the chili...

Of course, my favorite features in this campground, being as I am a tent-camper, include the clean restroom facilities located on every row, which include nice hot showers!

Even if you don't want to camp, you can still enjoy the picnic area near the campground.  There are nice restrooms located near the picnic area as well.
